What it means to be green in the storage industry

Seagate was recognized as the greenest storage device manufacturer by Newsweek in their 2009 Green Rankings of Fortune 500 companies.  Seagate was ranked 182 positions higher than its nearest competitor on the list.
Just as significantly, Seagate is a strategic supplier to the #1, #2 and #4 ranked technology companies – HP, Dell and IBM.  Seagate’s [...]

Are storage vendors middlemen?

“Where have all the agents gone?” asks Seth Godin.  Travel agents, real estate agents, etc. – all endangered species because people can more and more easily get what they want, or at least need, without them.
Are storage vendors middlemen? Some could be, and that’s not necessarily bad.  There remains a place for irreplaceable “agents” that deliver what no one else can. [...]

IBM, Sun and Cisco in a word: comm-puting

Thanks to Om Malik for netting out the dramatic changes in the IT industry this week.  He sees Sun ceding their “The Network is the Computer” vision to Cisco, who can actually make it happen.  He coined the term “comm-puter” for this disruptive change in high-end computing.
Turns out making the network the computer is easier for [...]

The recession finally catches up with storage

IDC’s numbers show IT storage revenue is down for the first time in five years.  Seems the economy finally trumped data growth.  Data is still growing; revenue is down, not capacity.
EMC is still on top by a large margin, followed by IBM, HP and Dell.
Byte and Switch summarized the IDC report succinctly here.

PCs have entered the Content Era

Source: Office Depot
Office Depot’s Sunday newspaper insert highlighted each of their notebooks on sale with large-font text centered on each notebook’s monitor, each with these three specifications:

Screen: 19″
Memory: 6 GB
Hard Drive: 500 GB, etc.

These words were even more prominent than the notebook brand (HP, Toshiba and eMachines).
The Content Era of PCs
This is evidence that PCs have [...]

The Cloud: the Big Box retailer of IT

  Source: Ryan Companies
I love Home Depot.  But I shop just as often at my local Ace Hardware store.  I go to Home Depot for big purchases, and stop in at Ace for quick-grab items and localized expertise.  What kind of mouse traps work best in our neighborhood?
IT will follow the same two-tier model into the next decade:

Cloud Computing [...]

HP, IBM and EMC lead the way to universal encryption

Encryption took a big step towards ubiquity across IT with a proposal from the leaders of the IT hardware industry last week.
HP, IBM and EMC’s RSA Security, along with Seagate, Thales Group, Brocade and LSI Corp, submitted a new standard that will pave the way for servers, storage systems, networking gear, tape and disk drives -  even [...]

Cisco to enter the server market

Virtualization is opening the door for Cisco to expand dramatically in the data center.
Cisco is moving into HP, IBM and Sun’s market turf in a way that they may not be able to easily reciprocate.
Is it that easy to become a player in the server market?  Clearly Cisco is a respected name in IT.  But Cisco has [...]

Will Cisco enter the server business?

Servers would give them the third leg of the data center “stool”

Chris Mellor interpreted Cisco’s recent body language around servers.  Will they jump into the server business?
It’s not that much of a stretch.  It’s only fair, as HP and others don’t shy away from dabbling in Cisco’s networking space.
And Cisco has already crossed into the storage realm.
Used [...]

HP moves to 300GB SAS

75% less power and 70% less space than 3.5″ drives

HP’s making the move to 300GB 2.5″ SAS drives.  The Seagate-built drive is twice the capacity of previous 2.5″ SAS drives.  HP began shipping the Savvio 10K 300GB SAS drive worldwide to resellers this week.
This is another step in the rapid enterprise storage form factor transition [...]
